What is LASIK ?
One of the most popular ways to correct vision is with a procedure called LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis).
The LASIK procedure uses a laser to change the curvature of the cornea (outer window of the eye). LASIK has rapidly become the procedure of choice for many patients because of the quick recovery time and the fewer side effects and complications than with other methods of vision correction. The majority of LASIK patients notice a significant improvement in their vision soon after surgery. LASIK can be used to effectively treat low to high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
To treat nearsightedness, the steep cornea is made flatter by removing tissue from the center of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina.
To treat farsightedness, the flat cornea is made steeper by removing tissue outside of the central optical zone of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from behind the retina to directly on the retina.
To treat astigmatism, the cornea is made more spherical -- like a basketball instead of a football. This eliminates multiple focusing points within the eye and creates one point of focus on the retina. Astigmatism can be treated at the same time as nearsightedness and farsightedness.
Your vision is unique - as personal as your fingerprint or your DNA.
WaveScanŽ technology provides your eye doctor with a map of your vision.
WaveScan Technology
Initially you'll meet with Dr. Sweeney for a complete medical evaluation and eye history to determine whether you are a good candidate for the CustomVue procedure. Dr. Sweeney will discuss the benefits and risks of the procedure with you. A WaveScan measurement will be taken to map the unique characteristics of your vision.

Using this "eye map" Dr. Sweeney will be able to quickly and accurately assess whether you're a good candidate for laser vision correction. Anyone who is considering laser vision correction should obtain a WaveScan measurement as the first step.
Along with the other diagnostic tests that Dr. Sweeney performs, an individualized treatment plan will then be developed to address your unique vision needs. Once it is confirmed that you are a good candidate, Dr. Sweeney will schedule you for a CustomVue procedure and provide details to you on how to prepare for the day of the procedure.
